Dental Exams

Why are dental exams and cleanings essential?

Dental exams and cleanings are essential because there are many areas of the mouth and the teeth which we cannot see or access ourselves easily. When you go to a dental office, areas that we cannot reach or see can be seen by someone else. These are really important for your health.

What is included in a dental exam?

In a dental exam, we first scan you, then we take some X-rays. One of our staff members comes and sees you, goes over all your particulars, your health and everything, and then a dentist examines you and sees what all is going on with you.

What is a dentist looking for during a dental exam?

A dentist is looking for any abnormalities in your bite, cavities, gum disease, cancer screening, other things that happen in the mouth, growths, tumors, ulcerations. We need to look for those things and make sure that they don't go unnoticed or unseen for a really long time and become a danger to your health or life.

What type of recommendations might come from a dental exam?

A dental exam might come with as simple a recommendation as you need a cleaning, to more complex ones like you need some cavities filled, or you need some crowns or extractions or wisdom teeth extractions, or you need your bite fixed, or you need to see a specialist. Our hope is that all you need is a cleaning. If you're not there right now, we eventually get to a point where you only need cleanings and nothing else.

How long does a full dental exam take?

A full dental exam on your very first visit, I would expect it to be an hour and a half to two hours long, because it requires a lot of information. After that, if you need anything, it goes really fast. We can bring you back or possibly do it at the same visit, a cleaning, fillings or whatever. The very first visit where we get to know you better, you get to know us better, takes a little bit longer. So anywhere between an hour and a half to two hours is what I would say it takes.

Are dental exams painful?

Not at all. Dental exams are completely painless and you should not have any pain during dental exams.
