Dental x-rays are usually intraoral x-rays taken inside the mouth. Sometimes, we take CT scans or other types of x-rays depending on your personal circumstances. The dental x-rays are taken with a special digital device called sensors. It's really quick and easy, almost like taking a picture with a camera.

Are dental x-rays safe?

Dental x-rays are very safe. If you are pregnant or have any health conditions, we check that before the dentist makes a decision on whether it's safe to take your x-rays. But for normal individuals or people with no health conditions, it is very safe.

Can dental x-rays show periodontal disease?

Yes, dental x-rays can definitely show periodontal disease. We use other visual exam methods as well, like an intraoral exam, to make a confirmatory diagnosis, but dental x-rays are needed for us to diagnose gum disease or periodontal disease.

Dental x-rays are mostly covered by insurance depending on when your last x-rays were taken. Most of the times, it is covered by your insurance.
