Laser Dentistry FAQ in Orange County, California

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Is Laser Dentistry and How Is It Used in Modern Dental Care?

In modern dental care, laser dentistry involves different types, such as hard laser and soft tissue laser. It can be used for treating gum disease or tooth disease.

  • How does laser treatment work for gum disease?

Essentially, the laser blasts away the germs or the diseased gum in the pocket area. When used by a trained professional, it can help eliminate gum disease in addition to other processes.

  • What Is the Difference Between Laser Gum Treatment and Traditional Deep Cleaning?

A deep cleaning sometimes is not sufficient for treating gum disease. Additionally, your hygienist or doctor might recommend laser treatment as an adjunct to regular cleaning to address the disease process deep inside your gum tissue that cannot be accessed for cleaning.

  • Can you explain what laser gum surgery involves?

Laser gum surgery involves removing parts of your gum with a laser that are diseased and need to be removed for various reasons. It is generally less traumatic than regular surgery.

  • What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Laser Therapy for Gum Disease?

Laser therapy is very easy and generally painless. Think of it as sterilizing your gum tissues with the laser. We can't remove your gums that are diseased with a deep cleaning, as we can only remove foreign objects or deposits in your gum area or on your teeth. We cannot actually remove your gums because you need them. So, we use the laser to treat the disease while preserving the gums.

  • What should patients know about laser fillings for cavities?

Laser fillings are usually done with a water laser where some of the disease process is removed with the laser. It's typically effective for very small cavities. For very large cavities, the results might not always be as desired, and it works better in smaller lesions.

  • How Is Laser Treatment Used for Teeth Whitening and Is It More Effective Than Other Methods?

Laser whitening is basically a source of providing heat to the whitening process. I'm not sure if it is more effective than just regular blue light used for whitening teeth. It's the whitening product that actually whitens the teeth, not necessarily the light or the laser. I'm not certain whether laser whitening is better than regular whitening.

  • How much does laser teeth whitening typically cost?

Laser whitening costs, depending on how many sessions you need or how much whitening you require, can range anywhere between $300 to $1,000, depending on your exact scenario.

  • Is laser gum contouring or gum removal a common cosmetic procedure?

Laser gum contouring can be performed where needed. It's a very good, painless way of recontouring your gums. You must need it for it to be done, as it's not just a cosmetic process. It's performed for specific situations.

  • What does laser dental cleaning involve and who is a good candidate?

Laser dental cleaning is done in conjunction with a regular cleaning or a deep cleaning. Your hygienist or dentist will recommend it for you if needed, depending on the level of infection you have.

  • Are there benefits to choosing laser dentistry over traditional tools for certain procedures?

Laser dentistry is very effective in the treatment of gum disease. It's a great tool to have without undergoing invasive surgery and is very effective in treating gum disease.

  • How Do You Determine if a Patient Is a Good Candidate for Laser Dentistry?

The dentist, doctor, and hygienist determine whether you're a good candidate for laser dentistry based on your personal clinical situation.
